Provost’s Park, Bridge of Allan

We were delighted to be asked to get involved in this project in our local village by the Bridge of Allan Community Council. Provost’s Park had lain empty and uninspiring for a while and did not reflect the vibrant, bustling Victorian spa village surrounding it. We met with a sub-commitee to discuss the requirements which we agreed were to create a practical area for the community to relax; to create a beautiful space which reflects the attractive village of Bridge of Allan; to create a design using a Victorian theme, tying in with the local architecture and history of the village.

A strong, symmetrical design, tying in with the Victorian theme, was created with an ornamental gazebo as the central feature. Plenty of seating was a must to allow local residents and visitors somewhere to sit and relax in the heart of the village. Wide paths with a warm golden finish allow plenty space for a wander or disabled access.

The existing toilet block was screened using bespoke laser cut screens which depict scenes and features from around the village. An ecclesiastical garden was created in the top corner to reflect the fact that the Park is the site of a former church. The existing historic fountain was relocated to this section of the garden and is a strong focal point.

The Provost’s lamp has been renovated and is the focal point of the front section of the Park. There is also some lawn to this area to add a softer finish and somewhere for children to relax.

The planting reflects the formal, Victorian style of the gardens. Topiary is a key feature with buxus balls, spirals and cones. A wide range of shrubs from corylus contorta and phildelphus ‘Belle Etoile” to cotinus ‘Royal Purple’ and viburnum mariesii add structure to the garden with lavenders, primula vialii, heuchera, salvia and phlox adding a splash of colour along with the bedding plants.
