A Playful Family Garden
Our clients had recently bought their new home in Bridge of Allan and had undertaken a major renovation of the house including a large extension. The garden had few redeeming features before but following the building work there was a definite requirement to address the outside areas. The only items to stay were a lovely old apple tree and a few shrubs. The garden shed was to be relocated to its new home behind the garage. The brief was to create a relaxing space for the clients to enjoy whilst still being able to accommodate their family, including the grandchildren. A swing was a recent gift to be incorporated into the design whilst keeping the garden low maintenance.

So we left home and our jungle and came back to an amazing transformation."

The clients already had a morning patio built as part of putting the extension on the house. They required somewhere to dine outside and take advantage of the sunniest corner of the garden. This sunny corner was already home to a beautiful, gnarled old apple tree which needed a bit of TLC to return it to its former glory. The patio was built in the same textured buff slabs edged in sandstone setts as the morning patio and the tree was made a feature within the patio. The patio was made large enough to accomodate dining for all the family as well as incorporating a secluded area in the corner for a bench seat and chiminea.
A large lawn area was incorporated into the design to allow plenty area for the grandchildren to run around. A corner of the lawn was dedicated to the new swing and surrounded with phyllostachys nigra. Beyond the swing new trellis panels screen the shed in its new home and a wisteria was planted to grow up the screens.
The borders were planted up with a selection of feature shrubs such as cotinus, sambucus nigra, phormium, azalea and an acer. To reduce maintenance limestone gravel was selected to finish all borders. The clients’ pots were planted with astrantia, buxus sempervirens and festuca ‘Elijah Blue’. A bird bath and decorative balls finished off the look.
