Our clients have a Canadian background which was why an Inukshuk (a stone figure) was to be a focal point in this garden design. Other things on the wish list included a patio, in-built seating, lawn, beautiful planting and a space to relax around a fire pit.
Creating new seating areas and paths connecting the various parts of the garden was key – new steps were created at the patio doors and back door, a wide paved area at the back gate was created to allow easy access with bikes and a new patio for dining linking to a path to the garden room were built. The clients chose Vetusto Rustic Gold porcelain which looked stunning when laid.
At the main patio area a raised bed was built from bricks with a coping to match the patio and was filled with fragrant and tactile planting. Another one was built at the garden room to create balance and repetition.
The client’s prunus incisa ‘Kojo-No-Mai’ was retained and became a focal point in the new lawn and stunning new planting was added with evergreen structure such as skimmia, rhododendron, azalea and fatsia japonica with beautiful herbaceous, grasses and bulbs added to create a softness and added interest including stipa tenuissima, echinacea, delphinium and tiarella.
Two new features pots were purchased to frame the patio doors and planted with buxus sempervirens.
In the lower part of the garden, a low maintenance area was created with a gravel finish and planting added to soften it. Chairs to relax in around a fire pit will be added to this area where the main focal point of the garden sits pride of place – The Inukshuk! Michael carefully chose each of the stones and brought this fella to life – doesn’t he look great?
