A Dog Friendly Garden Transformation

Our dog loving clients were desperate to transform their garden into a place for everyone to enjoy and relax. Previously the oil tanker and retaining wall of this sloping garden were right at the back door and there was nowhere to relax. The garden had to be safe for their dog to enjoy and not be able to escape.

A new retaining wall was built in order to create a large, lower sandstone patio. The retaining wall was built in blockwork then clad in contemporary horizontal timbers and finished with large pieces of sandstone on top. The oil tank was moved to the top of the garden out of the way and hidden behind a timber screen.

An upper patio was created using the same golden sandstone with vertical sleepers allowing for a curving retaining wall. New, welcoming steps make it easy to move between the levels. A new lawn is edged with sandstone setts to keep the lawn neat and easy to maintain.

Low maintenance and wildlife friendly planting including Ceanothus repens, Prunus incisa “Kojo-no-mai”, Buddleja “Pink Delight” and Viburnum plicatum ‘Summer Snowflake’ which are combined with shrubs such as Phormium, Fatsia, Carex and Hebe to create year round interest. The borders were finished with a decorative gravel to reduce maintenance. A personalised herb planter was created using upcycled pallets.

New fencing and a gate ensures that the garden is dog-friendly.
